How the Fibroid Diagnosis I Received 17 years Ago Has Been a Benefit to My Life

In 2008, at age 35, I was diagnosed with fibroids. I had no idea how much of a blessing AND benefit it would be to my life.

How the Fibroid Diagnosis I Received 17 years Ago Has Been a Benefit to My Life

Let me start by saying that Juneteenth and Kwanzaa are every day for me. Fibroid Awareness month, which starts today in July is also every day for me. I embody these ‘holidays’ because they have informed how I take care of myself as a Black woman living with fibroids in the world. I have had to be vigilant, committed and disciplined with my time, money and energy because of the fibroid diagnosis. Because of this, it has helped me learn how to take excellent care of my physical and spiritual/emotional self-care needs, according to the holistic wellness framework called Strategic Self Care.

The fibroid diagnosis made it so that I practice cooperative economics aka Kwanzaa principles 365 days of the year. Why? Because I vote with my dollars and mainstream corporations that the general public depend on, do not align with my physical self care needs. Many of the corporations a lot of you depend on for personal care use products and food supply contribute to environmental toxins that feed fibroids and the exploitation human labor. Walmart, Target, Amazon, Publix, to name just a few.

My womb story starts at age 11. That is when I got my menstrual cycle.
